Paralegal Job Description
Necessary Skills:
- Excellent time management and organizational skills, ability to work independently and prioritize tasks and deadlines. This is a deadline driven position.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Case management skills including review, analysis and production of documents, and other litigation support.
- Proficient understanding and utilization of medical terminology, anatomical drawings, laboratory tests, and medications.
- Strong technical skills in litigation software and e-Discovery tools.
- Develops work product with minimal direct supervision.
- Must possess critical thinking skills and be able to work independently and be proactive.
Responsibilities:
- Establish and organize files, maintain and monitor calendars, meet deadlines, document actions, and confirm case status with attorney.
- Review and summarize medical records, transcripts of hearings and oral arguments for attorney use.
- Analyze medical records to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the medical evidence, including pre- or co-existing medical conditions.
- Determine, prepare and organize material needed for expert witness review.
- Prepare and file subpoenas; prepare and file discovery requests; and organize materials for case review.
- Perform complex legal research and draft memorandums, pleadings, discovery requests and answers, stipulations, orders, motions, and correspondence.
- Review, analyze and organize document productions by opposing parties and co-defendants.
- Review file for outstanding discovery in preparation for court appearances, pleadings, depositions, and trial preparation.
- Assemble chronologies of key documents.
- Review case related materials and identify potentially conflicting statements or areas requiring further investigation.
- Support firm attorneys in all matters related to preparing case files and representing clients.
- Help develop cases by maintaining contact with people involved in the case; directly interact with court staff and opposing counsel.
Qualifications:
- 3 to 5 years of experience as a litigation paralegal.
- Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies or paralegal certificate from certified program highly preferred.
- The ability to perform multiple tasks and take on last minute projects
- Knowledge of medical terminology required.
- Insurance and medical malpractice defense experience is a plus
